“One of the first times I rememmber imagining fantastic worlds in great, real spaces was in the Moscow metro. I started taking the metro by myself when I was twelve only a year before we left Russia. Its huge, vast halls adorned with mosaics, sculptures and gold columns looked like a palace to me. I imagined that some where in this palace there was a queen and the trains carried noble counts and counteses to a great ball. I love creating theater in big operaic spaces. When I paint in pastels the layers of pigment meet the texture of the paper and this texture is integrated into the painting. I use the same method when creating site specific theater productions, the texture of the space is integrated into the performance, the location becomes a partner, another actor. I believe that site specific immersive theater has a tremendous ability to heal. Each location has its emotional naratives. By immersing the audience in artistic interpretations of these naratives we create a framework which allows to come to terms with the stories behind these spaces and begin to see them in a new light.”
